Fifteen

Before the sun was even up, Bailey was scratching at the door to get out.

“It’s too early, Bae.”

I pressed a pillow against my face, but it didn’t drown out his whine. With a groan, I rubbed my eyes and peered at the clock; a little after five in the morning.

We made eye contact, and I shot him a dirty look. “It’s a good thing you’re cute.”

I slid out of bed like a swamp thing and crawled into some leggings and a sports bra. While I tied my shoes, the little cretin celebrated his win by bounding around the room at roughly warp speed. Unfortunately for him, our accommodations were tiny—hardly enough space to stretch his long legs.

I frowned as I kissed him on the head and attached the leash. He’d been so patient with me through this whole thing. Perhaps I should have left him with Jess while I finished with this curse business. Her landlord didn’t allow pets, but, well… there were always creative ways around that.

Speaking of Jess, it was past time to check in. Like… miles past. But then again, she was probably plotting ways to kill me at her earliest opportunity. Knowing Jess, she’d already organized them into lists.

Jess, at my apartment, with a wrench.

Jess, at the park, with a soccer ball.

Jess, making me parallel park, by embarrassment.

We slipped outside, and I breathed in the crisp spring air. I couldn’t have asked for a prettier morning. The sky boasted watercolor strokes in stunning pinks and blues. The waves rolled in, hitting the beach just across the street from the inn.

The moment Bailey’s paws hit the sand, I let him go, and he was off like a rocket. Within seconds, he’d located the most disgusting hunk of rotting tree branch he could find and laid it proudly at my feet.

My nose scrunched. “You’re really going to make me touch that?”

He barked, lying on his belly.

Ugh. “Fine.”

I used my shoe to hold it down while I pried off a piece the size of my fist. I flung it as hard as I could, and he tore off after it. We kept up the game while making our way down the beach. He loved it, so I begrudgingly obliged.

I took a moment to simply appreciate the tranquility.

So much had happened in such a short amount of time that I was still trying to comprehend it all. But I had to admit, it was nice here. Quiet.

Of course, anything would be quiet when comparing it to home. Los Angeles wasn’t exactly known for its small-town charm.

This place, though.

I didn’t even remember the name of this city, but I could see what all the Pacific Northwest hype was about. After all this curse business was over, maybe I’d settle down in a little seaside town like this. A long time from now. After I saw the world and ticked off everything on the bucket list of hopes and dreams that had been quietly taking root in my heart since learning about the soul stone.
